Glenmorangie 12 Year Malaga Cask Review

Glenmorangie 12 Year Malaga Cask Review

So, what is Malaga wine?  It is a sweet and fortified wine that hails from Malaga, Spain.  The grapes used for this wine are either Moscatel or Pedro Ximenez.  If you like sweet dessert wine, you should try and fine some Malaga dulce.

A Limited-edition 12-year-old single malt matured in ex-bourbon casks and finished in casks that previously held one of the rarest fortified wines in the world - Malaga Dulce.

12 years @ 47.3% Alcohol and non-chill filtered, cask finish is a first fill Malaga dulce wine.

Tasted neat in my Glenmorangie copita glass, then added water and then an ice cube.  This was the neck/first pour so I will most likely revisit this.

Color - Honeyed amber, beautiful color.

Nose - I get raisins, figs, a dessert sweetness, caramel, orange peel, honey. This is a wonderful Scotch to nose, lots of pleasant aromas keep you coming back for more.

Palate - Dried fruit, orange, dates, a bit of chocolate…it’s got a nice mouthfeel. It’s sweet but balanced nicely with a nutty, malty kind of note. I really like this bottle, glad I bought a backup.  The finish is medium-long.

A dash of water brings out more sweetness on the nose and on the palate, it toned out and muted that nutty note a bit.  I popped in a small ice cube and it really became a dessert wine, the honey notes were pronounced and I enjoyed it even more on this hot and humid day.  This dram is a winner no matter how you like to enjoy your whiskey.

Verdict - This is really good and will definitely appeal to those who like a sweeter style of scotch whisky.  I will revisit this as it opens up but I don't hesitate to recommend it as a bottle worthy purchase.

87/100

Cheers!
